The Loose Salute

I’m really falling for an impulse buy for which I had few hopes. I hold large amounts of affection for the first and third Mojave 3 albums (Ask Me Tomorrow and Excuses for Travelers), ignore the second (and also the one Rachel Goswel solo effort I have), and abhor the fourth, so when I saw an album with a sticker boldly proclaiming that this new record has a musician from Slowdive and Mojave 3, I figured I was slightly honor-bound to check it out.

I’m really glad I did. When I’m not actively listening to it, it feels a little light. This isn’t the problem that it sounds, though, for it’s the kind of lightness that a well organized backpack has during a hike in the wilderness. Everything you need is there, placed in appropriate places with care and love and a bit of sorrow. The best song on the album is the second track, “Photographs and Tickets”, which sounds a bit like “Pictures” from Ask Me Tomorrow. “Turn the Radio Up,” featured below, is a darn good tune, too. Even the overly repetitive “Why’d We Fight?” hasn’t annoyed me yet, and given that the title is used as lyrics as often as Blink-182 used sophomoric humor, that’s pretty amazing.
