*inarticulate frustrated rumbles*
Way back when* I’d thought that it would be nice if tonight I’d write up a little post about being a new Mac user, and I’d try to differentiate the niceness at having a laptop with the niceness of having a Mac. But then the parts for the PC I said I’d build for my dad/stepmother came.
Assembly went pretty well; I’ve done that enough that I don’t have to hunt through manuals (unless the motherboard features a completely insane design), and I have a nice little plan of action when I’m doing it. I am annoyed that I forgot to get a SATA DVD/CD drive for them, their old IDE drive is CD only and the install disk from the motherboard manufacturer that’s full of Nifty, Useful drivers is a DVD. That isn’t why I’m still awake, even though I’ve been a bit short on sleep this week and I have to be at work in about six hours, is installing Windows.
That’s not entirely true. I did have a copy of Windows installed an hour or so ago, but for some reason it kept hanging up, not going to a full BSOD, no, just a complete freeze. Waiting it out like a recalcitrant child seems just to have prolonged the time I’ll be awake today. So I’m trying another install disk, hoping that there was some unidentified issue with the other one. Fingers are crossed.
While I did have the computer up and running, and while I was installing some necessary programs, I realized that I’m a nearly a black-belt in Moron-Fu. I really should have done all the export work for Thunderbird, iTunes, Firefox, etc. before I ripped the guts out of the old machine and slapped in hardware that the Slowinski’s would hate. I’m not looking forward to a weekend of trying to get old and new installs of Thunderbird to play nicely together when I can’t get the old install to boot up, as the old hard drive no longer seems to be recognized as a legitimate boot disk. Gah.
