Earlier in the summer when eMusic acquired the rights to sell Sony signed artists the monthly plans changed from Exceedingly Generous to Okay, I Guess. As a bit of a salve, eMusic gave their current customers* twenty-five bonus songs, and when I went to cancel, I got another twenty-five songs. And then a week or so ago, when I was checking eMusic’s page, I got another 50 free tracks.
That all means that I’ve paid just about the same price per track as I always did, except that with the new “deal” albums, I’ve gotten a slightly better average price. Also, there’s something about rating a certain amount of albums to get some more free songs, which’d mean I’d get a slightly Larger Than Typical amount of songs for my dollar.
But that’s looking at it objectively. I know that as soon as eMusic said “hey, you want to cancel? here’s 25 more songs!” I was going to stay for at least a month longer than I’d intended. It just felt wrong to take a couple free albums and not keep using the service. (Yes, I know I’m a sucker. Thanks.) With that intention to keep using the service at the reduced amount of Songs Per Dollar, I’d already ratcheted my expectations down a few notches, but now I’m contemplating spending the 50 Free Songs windfall in extremely profligate ways.
All that means is that eMusic has a good marketing program and I’m a very well trained consumer. Sigh.
