I’ve been listening to a bit of Rachel Yamagata and Rilo Kiley lately, and thought that I should give the old college effort in trying to determine who I like better, Jenny Lewis or Rachel Yamagata.
Looking just at the albums I own that each is a primary contributor, this should be no contest, Jenny has a 3 to 1 lead (Rabbit Fur Coat along with Rilo Kiley’s Execution of all things and More Adventurous against Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart) Quantitative Winner: Lewis
A straight album to album comparison is unfair to Rachel Yamagata since I’ve only owned any album by her for about a week. A more accurate method would be to compare iTunes star ratings, more specifically the amount of songs that appear on my Top Rated playlist. Jenny Lewis has three songs rated four stars out of thirty-four possibilities*, approximately a 9% rating. Rachel Yamagata has two four star and two five star songs out of 15 possibilities**,
for approximately 27%. Qualititavie Winner: Yamagata
For general pop culture, I think Lewis has a slight edge. Yamagata’s had her music in TV and movies, but Lewis has been in both. Sure, Lewis’ acting career is separate from her musical one, but she was in the Wizard! With Fred Savage! There was a Power Glove! And an awkward kiss! I loved that movie. I can’t think of more relevant categories, so I hereby declare my the winner to be Jenny Lewis by a red hair. Given a little more time to get to know Yamagata’s music, and finding out how often she plays the heavier stuff like “Sidedish Friend” (more = better), I could see this tipping the other way. Either way it tips, I’m a happy happy music fan.
