Book Blogging Info-dump #2

Since the last time we hung out, dear blog, I’ve read more things. Shocking, I know. Even more shocking is that I still haven’t read what I told you I was going to read. Sometimes I think I should just say I’m going to do many horrible things, just because I almost never manage to do the things I talk about doing. On to the logging of books.

  • Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold

  • Pattern Recognition by William Gibson
  • To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
  • Lincoln’s Dreams by Connie Willis

The first three are all perennial rereads, full of wonderful booky comfort each time through. Lincoln’s Dreams is very fine, too, and amazingly superb for a first published novel. Happily for my tear ducts it doesn’t fall into the category of “Books that make rooms go misty for minutes at a time.” Willis did that effectively enough with Passage, thank you very much. Having read four of her novels before reading her first, it’s pretty easy to see the genesis of her standard themes and how this book really connects them all. There’s love, shown in romance (spoiler: sad) and friendship. There’s science and history, in the forms of doctors and researching for novels based during the Civil War. The research also doubles as time travel, and the dreams that occur are very similar to the out-of-body experiences of Passage. And it’s all packed in a book that’s slightly longer than a novella. Wonderful.
