Music Reduction

Moving all my stuff around three times in ‘09 taught me a few things. First, I only need help moving one piece of furniture. Second, I still like the physical act of boxing things up and moving them somewhere. Third, unpacking and worrying about finding the place for all my stuff is way less fun. Fourth, I have too much stuff.

Considering that all my stuff easily fits inside a 10 foot truck, that last point might strike people as a rather extreme. My sister would agree with my assessment though, she very clearly let me know that I had too many books when we were getting my things out of temporary storage in my mom’s basement. I do have a lot of books, but they’re hard for me to let go of, even when I’m double shelving titles just so they don’t get stacked on the floor.

I think I can part with CD’s a little more easily, even if I make sure I delete digital copies of the albums I’d be selling*. I did a first pass of this yesterday, stacking up all the cd’s that I’m fairly sure don’t have any songs I’d miss. Also excluded are discs that I might no longer listen to but that have some sort of personal meaning. Erring on the side of caution, I overflowed the 100 count spindle I’m using as a temporary holding pen. If any of my very tiny readership wants a list of those CD’s for the purposes of having them sent, send an email.

I’m hoping that going through this a few times a year with a rotating cast of media, I can reduce the amount of stuff I have to lug around, and make sure I only keep the stuff I really love, what makes me happy to own and have at my fingertips.

* should I ignore the copyright implications of doing away with my physical copy and keeping backups, it’d be a snap to ditch the physical media. At this point I have backups of backups of backups
