By conservative estimate*, I’ve listened to Hayes Carll 988 times. This is ridiculous since I’d never heard of him until I saw that the Old 97’s were coming to Chicago a bit more than a month ago. I now know that it’s quite a travesty that I’d never heard of him, and that he’s woefully under-popular. If you have even the slightest interest in hearing Country done superbly, with grace, sadness and humor, take a listen to some songs. And, hell, if Scarlett Johannson can get some cred for covering Tom Waits, surely a true blue country boy can get the same.

It’s a Shame. I can’t tell you how often I’ve played this on my iPod. A definite Stop And Listen.
Naked Checkers. Amusing and warm hearted
I Don’t Wanna Grow Up. Dude. Tom Waits.
Live Free or Die. Johnny Cash could have recorded this
Flowers And Liquor. “I like flowers/you like liquor/your way’s nice/but my way’s quicker”
Perfect Lover. A perfect guitar piece.
